ORANGE REVOLUTION COVERAGE WINS NEW JOURNALISM AWARD
Toronto, July 2005 -- Mark MacKinnon,
Globe and Mail, is the first winner of the new John Syrnick
Award for Journalism, sponsored by the Ukrainian- Canadian
Foundation of Taras Shevchenko.
According to the Selection Committee, headed by Dr. Christine
Turkewych, “MacKinnon’s coverage demonstrated
consistent, substantive and thorough coverage of Ukraine’s
history leading to the Orange Revolution, and consistently
described the critical period from the second election to
the final results of the third election that took place in
December 2004”. The selection committee included seventeen
pre-eminent Canadian academics and community leaders from
the Ukrainian-Canadian community, representing all regions
of Canada.
The John Syrnick Award for Journalism will be presented in
Toronto on August 24, 2005, at the Ontario Club. The date
of August 24 was chosen as it commemorates Ukraine’s
1991 Declaration of Independence from the former Soviet Union.
Invited guests will include leaders of the Ukrainian-Canadian
community; the Award will be presented by Andrij Hladyshewsky,
President, Shevchenko Foundation.
This new Award is named after John Syrnick, the long-time
influential editor (1947-70) of Ukrainian Voice, Canada’s
oldest Ukrainian newspaper. As a prominent community leader,
his articles passionately promoted Ukrainian-Canadian solidarity,
and the redefinition of Canada as a multi-cultural society.
