SHEVCHENKO FOUNDATION FINDS NEW HOME
The Shevchenko Foundation
is relocating its office effective August 1, 2005 from 456
Main Street to 202-952 Main Street in Winnipeg. The new facility
is located on the second floor of the Carpathia Credit Union
building.
The 456 Main Street address has been home for
the Foundation since 1963. Since then, the Foundation has
provided significant funds towards the upkeep and maintenance
of the building, becoming co-owners in 1988. In conjunction
with the UCC, the Foundation has, within the strict guidelines
of Heritage Winnipeg, made every effort to retain the building’s
historical integrity. The escalating needs and prohibitive
costs in upgrading the building to code caused the two Boards
of Directors to consider all possible options.
A presentation was made to the delegates attending
the XXII Triennial Congress of Ukrainian Canadians, held in
Winnipeg in October 2004. The Building Committee presented
an overview of the overall costs of maintaining a heritage
building, as well as future expenses that may arise. The cost/benefit
analysis of the property clearly indicated that the organizational
mandates would be better served from another less expensive
location.
The two Boards of Directors agreed that the
ongoing cooperative and supportive relationship between the
Ukrainian Canadian Congress and Shevchenko Foundation will
continue unchanged regardless if the two organizations no
longer share the same address as they had done up to now.
Foundation President Andrew Hladyshevsky Q.C.,
stated: “The decision to put the building up for sale
and to relocate was difficult but fiscally responsible.”
He further indicated, “that the proceeds from the sale
of the building will go into the Foundation’s capital
fund with the additional interest earned providing more grant
monies for community initiatives supporting our uniquely Canadian
Ukrainian culture and experience.”
The Foundation Board of Directors is very
pleased to be able to partner with another Ukrainian institution,
to provide a new home for the Shevchenko Foundation.
