UCFTS PROVIDES SUPPORT TO SHRINE OF
BLESSED VASYL VELYCHKOVSKY, C. Ss.R.
August 1, 2002
Winnipeg, Manitoba – The Ukrainian Canadian Foundation
of Taras Shevchenko (UCFTS) today announced a grant of $4,000
in support of the development of a shrine to Blessed Vasyl
Velchkovsky, C. Ss.R.
On June 27, 2001, in Lviv Ukraine, His Holiness Pope John
Paul II had four beatifications for the Ukrainian Catholic
Church. Blessed Martyr Nicholas Charnetsky and Companions
were beatified. Among them was Blessed Vasyl Velychkovsky,
a Redemptorist Bishop who became a Martyr. Blessed Vasyl lived
his last year of his life in Winnipeg, where he died and is
buried at All Saints cemetery.
St. Joesph’s Ukrainian Catholic Church has been designated
by the Holy See in Rome as the place where the relics of Blessed
Vasyl Velychkovsky are to be placed and venerated. This will
mark only the second time that a shrine has been built for
Martyr in Canada.
“The Foundation is pleased to provide its initial support
to a project which showcases the tremendous faith of a man
who faced the brutual anguish of communist oppression and
remained true to his faith,” said UCFTS President Andrew
Hladyshevsky, Q.C. “As a community we are grateful to
the late Metropolitan Maxim Hermaniuk for making it possible
for Blessed Vasyl Velychkovsky to spend his remaining time
among the Ukrainian community in Canada and to see first hand
this remarkable man of faith.”
In addition to the construction of the shrine at St. Joesph’s,
an additional room will be added and which will house a small
museum about Blessed Vasyl and the work of the Ukrainian Catholic
Church. Both spaces will be open as often as possible to the
general public.
