2002 UKRAINIAN DAY GIVEN SUPPORT
August 9, 2002
Winnipeg, Manitoba -- The Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of
Taras Shevchenko (UCFTS) today announced its support of Ukrainian
Day 2002, to be held on August 11, 2002. A grant in the amount
of $2,500 will be provided to the Ukrainian Canadian Congress
– Alberta Provincial Council to defray costs associated
with this event.
Ukrainian Day is jointly organized by the Ukrainian Canadian
Congress – Alberta Provincial Council and the Ukrainian
Cultural Heritage Village, together with the support and representation
of other community organizations. This year the event will
commemorate the victims of Canada’s first national internment
operation, 1914-1920 and will see the unveiling of a monument
in order to commemorate this historic event.
“The Foundation is pleased to support events which
raise public awareness and interest in the community life
of Ukrainian Canadians in Alberta,” said UCFTS President
Andrew Hladyshevsky, Q.C. “Albertans coming together
to better understand each other and appreciate the contributions
we all make to our society helps us all build better communities.”
In addition to invited guests this days events will include
a concert featuring Ukrainian and non-Ukrainian bands, soloists,
dancing groups, choirs, singers and musicians from across
Alberta and Canada. An artist’s painting exhibit, displays
and demonstrations are planned as well as sporting activities
for the youth.
A children’s program will also be provided and will
include a zoo, balloon animals, face painting and games. The
highly successful “Best Dressed Ukrainian costume will
once again be held.
The UCFTS was incorporated under an Act of Parliament in
1963, and has grown to nearly $7 million. The Foundation supports
projects throughout the country that will enhance the Ukrainian
Canadian community. Since 1964-65, the Foundation has provided
nearly $4.5 million dollars in support for the work of the
community.
