TORONTO - The Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko is pleased to announce a $25,000 literary award for Canadian authors.

The Kobzar Literary Award will recognize outstanding contribution to Canadian literature through the author's representation of a Ukrainian Canadian theme.

The prestigious award joins the largest Canadian book prizes, accepting works in any of five categories: literary non-fiction, fiction, children's literature, poetry or drama. Submissions may be published in English, French or Ukrainian.

"The Shevchenko Foundation wishes to create a perpetual legacy for Canadian authors to continue to enthrall the world with the stories that emanate from our well-spring of diversity," said Shevchenko Foundation president, Andrew Hladyshevsky Q.C. "The purpose of the Award is to spawn great Canadian stories from the minds and pens of Canadian writers in the centuries old tradition of the wandering story tellers of ancient Ukraine, the Kobzars. By the end of the 21st century we hope to create a body of work worthy of our Canadian storytellers by honouring these future Canadian Kobzars."

Acknowledging the significance of the author/publisher relationship, both will be awarded for the winning submission. The author will receive $20,000, while the publisher of the work will receive $5,000.

The first winner of The Kobzar Literary Award will be announced in the Fall, 2005.

The Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko is a national, chartered philanthropic institution providing leadership by building and nurturing a permanent endowment fund dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Ukrainian Canadian cultural heritage and the advancement of a flourishing Ukrainian community for the enrichment of Canada.
